Though people use a variety of names for leaves in different regions/countries around the world. Irrespective of the nomenclature for leaves, the 'concept' and the 'types' of the leaves are universally the same.

Around the world, leaves are broadly classified into 2 main types:

  • Paid
  • Unpaid

However, both these types of leaves are further divided into different categories.

Apart from this, there are other leaves which are not necessarily called Paid or Unpaid, but instead they're meant for specific reasons and cannot be availed for those reasons. Namely:

  • Parental Leave (maternity or paternity)
  • Bereavement Leave (time off taken to due personal emergencies like a death in family)
  • Leave of Absence (requested/initiated by employer, like a temporary lay-off)
